Chapter Eight

Over the next few days, Cassie’s focus was on Nikki whenever she wasn’t at work. She wasn’t sure what her friend’s long-term plans were; the week she had planned for her vacation was almost up, but she’d made no mention of going home. It wasn’t that Cassie was eager for her to leave, but going home and spending time with her family would probably be better for her than staying here. Right now, she seemed stuck in limbo. According to Bridget, while Cassie was gone, Nikki spent her days sitting either on the guest bed or on the couch, staring at nothing.

Maddie’s next scheduled shift was that Friday, and Cassie had been eagerly awaiting seeing her employee. Maybe it wasn’t the kindest thing to do, but she had some burning questions about what had happened on the boat, and Maddie was her only hope for getting answers. She had finally gotten a text back after letting her employee know that Lynna had come looking for her with a strange man, but it didn’t give her any indications as to what was going on or how her employee felt about it all; all Maddie had said was, Okay, thanks for letting me know.

Friday was one of the busiest days at the pizzeria, and that week was no exception. The delivery drivers were constantly in and out of the building, bringing bulk orders to businesses and schools that had pizza parties, and to individuals who wanted to treat themselves for making it through another week. In the evening, they would be even busier, with deliveries to people who were watching whatever sports games were on or who were just catching up with their friends at the beginning of the weekend. Cassie spent the first few hours at work trying to keep up with the rush. After two, the lunch craziness began to die down, and she had a few hours to look forward to during which they wouldn’t have to deal with much more than a handful of dine-in customers. It was then that she chose to speak with Maddie.

“How are you holding up?” she asked her employee in a rare moment when the two of them were alone in the kitchen. Maddie was washing the dishes while Cassie put together a sausage and green pepper pizza.

Maddie looked over her shoulder, shrugging. “I’m doing all right, I guess? It was really horrible to help Lynna pull that man out of the water and realize he was dead. I’m sure it will stick with me forever, but it’s not bothering me quite as much anymore.”

“Did Lynna ever track you down? I know she wanted to talk to you.”

Maddie made a face. “No. Thanks for not telling her when I was coming back to work. I don’t really want to talk to her.”

“You’ll see to her tomorrow, though, won’t you?”

Her employee shook her head. “No, I won’t. I quit that job. This is the only place I work now.”

“I see.” Cassie bit her lip.
